EEG (Electroencephalogram)

An EEG records the electrical activity of the brain using small sensors placed on the scalp. It is a painless, non-invasive test that is especially useful in diagnosing epilepsy, evaluating blackouts, and assessing certain brain disorders.

Preparation

  • Wash your hair the night before; avoid oil or gel
  • Continue your regular medication unless told otherwise
  • Sleep may be restricted beforehand for a sleep-deprived study

The procedure

Soft sensors are gently attached to the scalp with a special paste. You will relax quietly, and may be asked to breathe deeply or look at a flashing light. The recording is completely painless and takes about 30–45 minutes.

Small surface electrodes are placed on the skin and a mild electrical pulse gently stimulates the nerve. You may feel a brief tingling. The responses are recorded and analysed to assess nerve function.
