An EEG (electroencephalogram) records the electrical activity of the brain using small sensors on the scalp. It is a painless test used mainly to diagnose epilepsy and evaluate blackouts and other brain disorders.
A nerve conduction study measures how well electrical signals travel through your nerves. It is the key test for diagnosing neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome and other nerve problems, and involves only mild, brief electrical pulses.
EEG is completely painless. NCS involves brief, mild electrical pulses that feel like a small tingle and are generally very well tolerated.
Wash your hair the night before and avoid oil or gel. Continue your medication unless advised otherwise, and avoid caffeine on the day. For some studies you may be asked to reduce sleep beforehand.
